The class will be transported back to war-time, into the middle of an air raid where Boyd Orr will tell the children all about war time rationing and listen to them telling him all about today’s supermarket shopping!
Commissioned by the Rowett Research Institute, Live Wire Productions have developed John Boyd Orr as a living history character focusing on life and times and whether the 1945 diet was healthier than today’s diet.
‘Their lively and fascinating drama production explores why the World War II rationing system was so successful and encourages the audience to think about and contrast to the present food-rich environment.’ Dr Sue Bird Rowett Research Institute
Boyd Orr’s research led to school children in Scotland and eventually the whole of Great Britain, being given free milk in school. Few, however, know that it was on the basis of his research that Lord Wooton, the Minister for food, designed the rationing programme during World War II.
Dr John Boyd Orr was the first director of the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. During his years as Director (1914 to 1945) he carried out, or instigated, research that was to have far reaching effects on the general awareness of the nutritional value of food and the importance of a balanced diet.
This programme supports the 5 – 14 curriculum Healthy Eating and World War II topics
