Lessons are about to start and the janitor walks in and gives the teacher a lesson in energy efficiency.  At the janitor’s request the children join in guessing the energy rating of classroom computers, lights, television and overhead projector.

Through role play, a potentially heated conversation is transformed by the Live Wire team into an engaging whole class discussion which ends “Do you want to know who is responsible for saving energy? Everyone – and that means you!”

Programme Details

Commissioned by Aberdeen City Council Energy Conservation Unit and supported by Aberdeen City Council Education Department, this presentation underlines the many ways in which energy is wasted, especially in schools, and encourages children to reduce this wastage in their own school.

Objectives: To raise awareness of energy consumption and inefficiencies in the classroom and to discuss ways that energy can be saved.

Each child:

1         Completes an energy audit and assessment of the energy consumption in the classroom

2         Identifies power consumption of everyday classroom electrical appliances

3         Looks at ways energy can be saved

School project: This presentation is designed to be the basis of a whole school energy audit by the children at a future date in their own school

A sustainable programme: Each participating school will be given a copy of the presentation and encouraged to present it to other class groups following the Live Wire visit.
