People who use care services, their carers and families are learning all about their rights under the National Care Standards, thanks to an entertaining intitative from the Scottish Government. As part of its National Care Standards for Older People Campaign, the Government commissioned Live Wire Productions to produce a play to help communicate the role National Care Standards play in raising the quality of care and explain to people what they should expect from their care service.
Live Wire Productions have visited fifty care homes and adult day centres across Scotland with 'Carry on Caring'. The performance involving three actors, is set in a care home and brings to life the choices and decisions that need to be made when choosing a care provider, in a humourous and light hearted way. It also sets out the principles behind the care standards, such as a person's right to privacy, in a bid to ensure people who rely on care services are aware of the standards they are entitled to.
"We encourage the care homes to invite the family and relatives of their residents so that our message about their rights under the National Care Standards can be understood by everyone, including the staff. So far the feedback has been good" Alistair Harvey - Live Wire Productions
"Scotland's National Care Standards are absolutely central to the relationship between the care providers and the people being cared for. They are clear and explicit. They ensure that the outcomes of care are right for the individual. We urge everyone using or choosing a care service, to read the Standard that applies to the service they have interest in." Jacqui Roberts Chief Executive of the Care Commission.
