COOL IT!

An environmental awareness 5 - 14 Curriculum linked programme

The Characters: Chuck Oot is a typical citizen. He owns lots of electrical appliances and a car which he uses to drive himself to and from work and to the shops, regularly puts his rubbish out on a Tuesday, generally minds his own business and is not in the business of saving the planet. Miss Cleighnan Green works for the Council but she is in the business of saving the planet, or at least trying to show people like Chuck Oot how they can help.

The Storyline: "Cool It!" follows Miss Green as she explains how we are all responsible. How everything in the way we live our daily lives can have a 'knock on' effect on the world around us.

We see how easy-to-follow good energy saving practises can cut the wasteful use of valuable fossil fuels and how simple waste management methods, adopting the three 'R' rule of 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' can limit the amount of rubbish we throw away thereby reducing the need for more, bigger landfill sites.

This 40 - 50 minute programme is adapted for P5 - S2 as required and covers the effects of pollutants, erosion of the ozone layer, deforestation and the greenhouse gases on global temperatures and weather patterns.

Launched at TechFest 2003 this programme is has all the key features of the other presentations in the Live Wire environmental quintet:

Part I: 'The Powerhouse' - Home Energy Conservation

Part III: 'Who says it's Rubbish' - Waste Management

Part IV 'Lights Out!' - School Energy Conservation

Part V 'Wheel of Science' - Energy and Conservation
