Tomorrow's world meets a past master

Youngsters who could soon be studying for degrees at Aberdeen University today got the chance to see how some of their celebrated predecessors applied themselves to science.

Here, Oldmachar Academy sixth year pupil Simon Rennie gets to grips with an electronical semi-conductor switch, ably assisted by electronics engineer Neil Sutherland in the guise of Patrick Copland - a professor of natural philosophy at Aberdeen University 200 years ago. Hundreds of schoolchildren from throughout Scotland were today given an insight into the engineering world as a prelude to tomorrow's open day at the university as part of its quincentenary celebrations.
