PRESS RELEASE

DANGER IN THE HOUSE!

(Aberdeen: 6th February 2006) Kitchen cupboards and bathroom cabinets have always been a potential hazard for children, but help is at hand in the form of The Drug Wheel of Science, a brand new Live Wire Productions show for P5 children, launched at Hanover Street Primary School earlier today and touring Aberdeen City Schools throughout the week.

Developed with funding from Aberdeen City's Drug Strategy Initiatives Fund and in consultation with Grampian Police, the Drug Wheel of Science is a game show led by two mischievous characters, Ali and Nic, who represent Alcohol and Nicotine. The show aims to help children understand the dangers of legal drugs as well as illegal drugs, focussing on the effects of various substances on both the body and behaviour. Along with general drug information, during the show today's eager young audience took turns to spin the wheel and answer questions about:

•  Food stuffs

•  Medicines

•  Alcohol

•  Volatile Substances

•  Smoking

The children were encouraged to explore the potential dangers of a variety of everyday substances they might come into contact with, such as air freshener and energy drinks.

Today's scorekeeper, Hanover Street teacher Mrs Braid said: "It's a very valuable topic because there's often confusion in children's minds over the issues." Head Teacher, Helen Maitland, agreed, saying: "Introducing the subject at an early stage can reduce misconceptions about drugs."

Vanessa Chew of Live Wire Productions said, "We are delighted to be able to offer the Drug Wheel of Science to schools. Everyday substances and legal drugs are often considered safe and this show provides an ideal opportunity for schools to present children with the facts through drama and fun. We are also very grateful to Grampian Police for their invaluable help in developing the programme."

Sandra Brown, Education Adviser to Grampian Police, who attended the launch at Hanover Street Primary School, said: "This is an excellent interactive show where the pupils learn in a fun way very important information about drugs as part of their drugs education programme."
