Musical with drugs message

Culter youngsters, their parents and friends got “hooked” during a drug awareness evening at their local primary school on Wednesday, May 16.

However, it was only the adrenaline of appearing live on stage during the musical presentation HOOKED! which excited the youngsters.

They had been working with actors from Aberdeen-based theatre in education company, Live Wire Productions, to put on the first-ever performance of a brand new rock musical for schools.

HOOKED! is funded by the 2004/2005 Scottish Drugs Challenge Fund and available to every school in Scotland, and gives young people an opportunity to explore drug-related issues through interactive drama and music.

Working in partnership with Grampian Police and Aberdeen City Joint Alcohol and Drug Action Team, the theatre in education group developed the resource, which includes scripts, sheet music, CD backing and vocal tracks, and an interactive CD-ROM of suggestions for classroom activities.

Culter School was the first in Aberdeen to stage the musical. Live Wire Productions' managing director, Vanessa Chew, said: “The children have worked extremely hard and it was wonderful to see them singing and dancing, delivering an important message to the audience while having fun.”

Culter School headteacher, Jayne Glover, said: “The HOOKED! experience carried a powerful and informative message about drugs and their misuse via a thoroughly fun and entertaining medium, singing and dance. It was a huge success and I would recommend the production to all schools.”
